Who Can Correct Her Course?

America and God’s Church

If America is a ship carrying her population, where is she right now? What is her condition this minute?

If our country has sailed the tumultuous seas of life on planet earth with freedom her pinnacle and bondage her demise, we might wonder about her current position. Are we at the precipice of the falls, or . . . are we already over the edge, sinking?

If God’s church in America is a rudder of the ship, how is she helping or hindering?

Who Corrects A Ship’s Course?

Of course it is the Skipper who would have the authority (and responsibility) to direct the correction of a ship. When consulting my friend, Google, I learned “The skipper of a floating vessel can be described as the heart of the vessel. He is responsible for the boat and takes care of everything related to it. … He is ultimately responsible not only for the safety of the boat, but also the safety, comfort and welfare of all those on board his boat.”

It’s not difficult to understand the reason for the challenges of 2020.

The skipper of a ship is a big deal. He’s taking us somewhere. And if you caught it above, I believe one of two places: freedom or bondage. Aren’t those the only two ways people on this planet live?

Division In The Church

I had no idea I’d get myself in a bit of hot water for boat-rocking last year. I wasn’t setting out to rock the boat, but from my vantage point, I aimed to help steady it.

Due to my understanding of where “the leaders” (and the potential leaders) of our country were directing our ship, and my public expressions of concern (I expressed my appreciation and new understanding for New Hampshire’s state logo: live free or die) and of praise (I praised the Lord when the WI Supreme Court struck down Governor Ever’s illegal mask mandate last summer) some people complained about me to my pastor.

In disagreement with my views, outcries emerged because I was seen as a leader in the church. Even though I did not currently hold a leadership position.

The pain my pastor was enduring from the grievances required several meetings. I met with my pastor(s) about things like social media use, convictions, and political views.

Stand Your Ground

As I drove to one of the meetings, I was experiencing some anxiety. I began to pray. God reminded me that my convictions were from Him. I didn’t need to defend them, but to stand firm on the ground where He’d planted me.

I count the challenges as the great blessings of 2020—because they caused me to dig deep. Having disagreement with brothers and sisters in Christ brought me closer to Jesus because I wanted to make sure my full allegiance was to God.

He held me fast and encouraged me greatly along the way.

As the summer rolled on, God directed me to certain books to educate me on the condition of the ship and the rudder. I learned about what influences impact the current state of both.

In speaking of the church as the rudder, I’m aware that there are other influences on the direction of the Ship. But since I am “of the church” I am mainly interested in her condition and in God’s will and direction for Her.

There is Only One True-North

In my ache over the disagreements that frankly shocked me, I continued to search for understanding. Many sermons became available online, and many people shared sermons with me. 2020 might be the richest learning year of my life so far. And the Lord met me through the wisdom of many. Clarity came one day when a pastor said, “Many are sacrificing truth for unity.”

John 17, a favorite passage, came to mind. I’ve studied it often.

Jesus prays just before going to the cross. It’s almost like it’s His last will and testament where He expresses what He wants us to grasp before He leaves. I never noticed before yesterday when I read it again. It’s actually a warfare prayer. I want you to read the whole thing, but for the sake of my point, read John 17:15-19 below (emphasis mine)

I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.
They are not
of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into
the world, I have also sent them into the world.
For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be
sanctified by the truth.

In those few verses you can see it’s THE TRUTH verses THE WORLD. As believers, we know that the cosmic war is between God’s word and man’s ideas as influenced by Satan.

Following this revelation of the reason for division, God brought me to 1 Timothy 3:15, which states that God’s intention for His church is that we be a pillar and buttress of truth. A buttress, according to Merriam Webster, is “something that supports or strengthens a structure; giving stability to a wall.”

And then I heard this sermon about closing the breach in the wall.

There Is A Truth That Is True

How convenient for the enemy of God that there are two political parties. How many times have you heard in the last year that the church should not be political? If you did, did you process what that means? Have you been silenced into sitting on your hands, riding the wave of “whatever will be will be”?

If God’s people are to be stabilizing supports of truth, first we need to agree on what the truth is.

Dear blessed church, we are not of two political parties, as the world would say. We are a unified body that sees things from a heavenly perspective. (See 2 Corinthians 5:14-21) We have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16) It is ONE mind. (Philippians 2:2)

The “skipper” of the church unifies his people when he parses out what the biblical perspective is. Teaching about how God sees public policy is not political, it’s giving the sheep confidence and direction.

Once we know and agree on the truth, if we fail to be involved in public policy in the land we’ve been given to steward, we go down. If we are agreeing to be silent as the ship sinks, then we are complicit in America’s demise.

Israel and America

There is a reason we are often paired together with Israel. God’s blessing has been upon us, and we have been allies. We both were founded upon God’s word. (“Americans’ affinity for Israelis also stems from our shared Judeo-Christian heritage” ~U.S.-Israel Relations: A Special Alliance, by Mitchell Bard)

God’s word applies to every soul, every nation, every continent. He owns it all. And we owe Him our allegiance.

God gave the enemies of Israel into Her hand as they followed Him in taking Canaan. Over time, they failed to steward what He’d given, and were exiled to a pagan nation.

God gave our founding fathers wisdom in writing the constitution to secure our liberty from tyranny. If we fail to steward what He’s given, we are essentially turning over the land He’s given to paganism and inviting persecution of God’s people. And none of us wants our hand in that.
