Hearing The Voice Of God

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

Though my dad has been gone since June of 2014, whenever I see a photo of him or think about him, I can still hear his voice. Not only do I hear the sound, but the words he would say, and the mannerisms with which he would speak still come in full color. Spending time with my dad ensured my ability to know his voice. Even when I cannot see him.

There was actually a time in my adult life that, without realizing it, I was living more in tune with his and other important voices in my life, than that of my Heavenly Father. I was often anxious about my decisions, and the Lord revealed that I’d been listening to too many voices.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of the impact of your father’s voice on your life, but if you have any recollection of his influence of your earthly life, you will understand how important it is to your spiritual life that you know the voice of your Heavenly Father. To do so, you must spend ample time in His word and with His people in His word.

Satan knows that if we have confidence in hearing God’s voice, that our walk with God will be victorious. He doesn’t want us to trust that we can hear. Consolation in your darkness? His direction in your indecision? Belief in His presence with you? Satan will work feverishly to cast doubt on our ability to hear God. The reason he has any success in doing so is we already have some doubt in our mind.

Our spiritual sword against doubt is the word of God. We hear His voice, and the voice of another we will not follow. [John 10:5]

I’ve just written a short journaling devotional. I’m going through it myself and have sent it to a few friends. Once I get feedback and do some final edits, I’ll have it available to purchase here on the blog.

The first day I encourage “listening prayer” which is basically journaling what the Lord is speaking to you. I’ve practiced this through the years, but not with much regularity. I am always built up in my faith and devotion when I do. By writing down what I hear Him say, I gain confidence in hearing His voice throughout the day.

When a new woman joins our Bible study, and I hear Him say, “Invite her to coffee,” I don’t hesitate. When I’m listening to a story of need, and I hear Him say, “Give her the $20. in your wallet,” I reach in and give it.

While reading through my entries this week, I heard Him say, “Post this word so people can see what you mean by listening prayer.”

Here are some of His words to me from my journal this week:

My precious daughter, I have clothed you with My garment of righteousness. I have given you My name and Kingdom authority. I have established you in My love and have filled you with My word. I have poured out grace through you, and have lifted your burdens.

I have sustained you in the darkness and held you in the light. Your face has always been toward Me as I called you Mine before you were born. I have plans to prosper you, to fill you and overflow My word to light and refresh lives. You are my chosen vessel to bring life wherever you go. It is good that you wait upon me and go willingly to the places I send you. Lift your eyes MORE to Me that they land less upon the world.

Pray to Me and pray with others -- I hear you because I pray through you. You are My mouthpiece -- you proclaim truth and righteousness -- I will call them higher and deeper into My word through you. They will want more of Me when they see My light in you.

Your time with Me is precious. I want you to see My favor upon you even when others don't. I withhold the praise of man so you don't rely upon it. Others do and bend; I want you strong in Me.

Praise from people weakens spiritual conviction. The desire to please men weakens My word by preventing it from coming out in boldness. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Fix your eyes on Me. You may feel weak at times, but you are spiritually strong.

It’s no surprise that words powerfully affect us and we become like what we behold. When I was a child, I spent a lot of time walking and working with my dad. His voice is so incredibly strong in my memory, and now that I’ve walked and worked with Jesus for thirty years, I can say the same. I know His voice, it is in my memory, and the voice of another I will not follow as long as I keep holding fast to His word daily.

Is your prayer life more of a monologue or a dialogue? Maybe you want to start to practice listening more for His voice.
